The O.S.S., was founded in 2009 by Skillet, the vocalist of seminal hardcore street punk band Wanted Dead, guitarist Ben Blessing and drummer Sid Hilarides (Sid Sloth) of Irieside.
Skillet, with his background firm in punk rock, and Blessing having been schooled in late 70’s rock, two tone SKA, and reggae guitar styles, created a sound that was realized immediately in one of the first songs they penned titled “You or Me”. With that, the “4th Wave New Kings of SKA” were born. Shortly after the three began to form the rest of the band starting with Joshua “Baby-Maker” Donahue, who is known for blasting soul shaking, panty dropping notes from his saxophone. Soon after, they would add a who’s who of local musical giants. Aaron “Knuckles” Peterson, (who originally hailed from the legendary Gilman street punk scene in Berkeley California) who also hails from the Wanted Dead camp play solid bass-lines that are seamlessly merged with his signature gallop and the 2-tone ska style The O.S.S. has become known for. Garrett “The Business” Grabowsky, would be The O.S.S.’s anchor on rhythm guitar. Grabowsky is one of the founding fathers of the amazing and versatile North County California band Stone Sense. “The Business” has spent years rocking, and opening for such acts as Pato Banton, The Wailers and The English Beat to name a few…Then there’s Tawnie, formerly of “Tawnie and the Replacables” bringing her talented vocals to add that something special that helps to set The OSS aside from the everyday average ska sound! Last, but certainly not least, The O.S.S. has Kelly “The Don” Dunn on keyboards, a holder of multiple Gold Records in sales. With Dunn caressing the ivories he gives The O.S.S. that classic soul-full sound that only a man of his musical expertise can bring.
Oceanside Sound System has a fresh sound that may be compared to a mash-up of The Specials, Operation Ivy, and The Clash with a fresh new SoCal twist. The O.S.S. proudly boats the “best live show around” and holds a firm belief that they are “The New Kings of Ska”. Sharing the stage with such bands as Buck-O-Nine, The Toasters, The Untouchables, Meet Me At the Pub, Left Alone, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Pepper, The Supervillians, Mustard Plug, The Expendables (just to name a few).
